Tap into 42nd Street this March!
Coming soon, the timeless Broadway classic 42nd Street will dazzle audiences on John Jay’s own stage, brought to life by a remarkable cast of actors, singers, and dancers! A show bursting with heart, ambition, and spectacular tap numbers, this production promises an unforgettable John Jay Theater Workshop experience.
The musical tells of aspiring performer Peggy Sawyer (Sami Sperling ’26) whose talent lands her an ensemble role in “Pretty Lady”, the latest musical from renowned director Julian Marsh (Avery Gatrell ’25). When the show’s leading lady, Dorothy Brock (Aya Greenspan ’25), suffers a show-stopping (literally) injury, Peggy must step into the spotlight and take on the biggest role of her life… with only thirty-six hours to prepare! Audiences will love the drama, following messy romance stories between multiple characters- similar to that in John Jay’s well-loved production of 9-5 in Spring 2023!
Beyond the compelling story, 42nd Street features an incredible cast with new talent and many familiar faces from The Dining Room in Fall 2024 (directed by Bill Friedman) and Legally Blonde in Spring 2024 (directed by Amanda Adamo). You’ll spot senior Aya Greenspan leading the show as Dorothy Brock along with junior Sami Sperling as Peggy Sawyer, senior Avery Gatrell as Julian Marsh, sophomore Gracyn Holm-Joergensen as Billy Lawlor, your favorite Greek Chorus from last year’s Legally Blonde as the chorus of “Pretty Lady”, and more! This Broadway classic is most famous for its fantastic musical numbers, and the cast is so grateful to work with dance captains Parker Whitney (’26) and Adina Talenfeld (’26). With their help, students dance their way through sixteen breathtaking numbers, including “Shadow Waltz”, “We’re in the Money”, and of course, “Forty-Second Street”!
The dedication behind this production extends far beyond the spotlight. Rehearsals run late into the evening each school day, with almost thirty students mastering intricate tap sequences- many stepping into the tap-dance world for the very first time! The commitment to precision and excellence echoes throughout the hallways as students practice tirelessly to perfect each step and sound. The hard work pays off and the skill of the cast is sure to impress audiences.
Bringing the show to life is a fantastic crew and staff team that is devoted to making the show the masterpiece it is. 42nd Street is directed and choreographed by Anne-Marie Galler, with production management by James Panzer, production oversight by Daniel Longhurst, and musical direction by Jared Henderson. Student production staff include stage manager Calvin Wein (’26) and student assistant director Cade Schwark (’25)! Adding to the excitement, the cast had the extraordinary opportunity to work with Tony Parise, a member of the original 1980 Broadway cast of 42nd Street!! Behind the curtain, the crew’s dedication shines just as brightly as the performers onstage. The build crew has been hard at work constructing an immersive set that will provide a visually stunning experience for audiences. Their weekend efforts are a testimony to the passion and teamwork that characterize John Jay’s theater community.
With anticipation building, students and faculty alike are eager to see the magic unfold. Teacher Mrs. “KMac” Tung shared her enthusiasm, saying, “The previous productions I’ve seen were incredible and I’m so excited to see 42nd Street!”.
