Lonzo

Lonzo

With the NBA Draft just days away, the attention has been centered around UCLA guard, Lonzo Ball, and his family. Lonzo was a standout at Chino Hills High School in Chino, California, committing to play basketball for Steve Alford at UCLA in his sophomore year. Following in his path, brothers LiAngelo (Senior), and LaMelo (Sophomore) have made verbal commitments to play at UCLA.

As Lonzo has caught the attention of the media, his father LaVar has taken advantage of this opportunity, making outlandish comments on a weekly bases. To name a few, LaVar has said: he would beat Michael Jordan in a 1-on-1, Lonzo is better than NBA MVP Steph Curry, and that UCLA would win the National Championship, which they did not. While some say that Lavar is playing the role of a proud father, others say his comments will be detrimental to his son’s’ future. Stars around the NBA have already made it known that they are out to get Lonzo in response to his father’s comments. With this, Lonzo quickly fired back that it will only make “[him] better,” and that he is looking forward to the competition.

Lonzo, a family man, has made it clear that he wants to stay local and play for the LA Lakers. Lonzo showed little to no interest for the Boston Celtics, who hold the #1 overall pick, as he denied an offer to workout for the team. Lonzo completed his lone workout for the Lakers on June 7th, where members of the media were watching his every move. With the #2 overall pick in the draft, Lonzo has nearly locked up a spot on the roster, a dream since he was a toddler.

Through the help of his proud and arrogant father, two little brothers, and his mother, Lonzo has grown to be a humble player with his sights set on greatness.
