Top Ten Movies to Pick Up During this Holiday Season

During the holiday season, there’s nothing better to do than tuck into your snuggie with a steaming cup of cocoa and a classic festive film. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanza, surely, one of these movies will suit your fancy. While this list is up for debate, here I compiled a top 10 list of my personal favorites.

Number 1.   Home Alone (1990)

If this one doesn’t ring a bell, I strongly recommend that you rent it ASAP. This film revolves around young Macaulay Caulkin’s character Kevin McCallister, who is left alone by his family in their sprawling house by accident after a mishap that results in the rest of his family leaving for Christmas vacation without him. He is left to shop, feed, and even fend for himself as spontaneous twists and turns lead him into trouble. Needless to say, shenanigans ensue, but you’ll have to watch yourself to find out!

Number 2.  Love Actually (2003)

Who doesn’t love a British ensemble cast sprinkled with a few love triangles?– Nobody! Set in London, this holiday romance centers in on nine relationships, and how they begin to interlink as their tales progress. What one thing do all these relationships share? The expression of love and what it truly means. Due to the Christmas season, emotions run particularly high, making for an even more engaging film.

Number 3. Doctor Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)

The original Grinch film, which debuted in 1966, is a musical cartoon classic that tells the tale of the Grinch, the grumpy anti holiday creature, and his numerous attempts to take away Christmas from the jolly people of Whoville.

Number 4.  Elf (2003)

Will Farrell spreading Christmas cheer in an elf costume?– Count me in! Buddy The Elf (Will Farrell) is transported to New York City after learning he is actually a human, and therefore wishes to meet his biological father, while making an effort to spread Christmas cheer throughout his journey. Not only does his positivity touch the New Yorkers around him, but he even manages to possibly find love along the way.

Number 5.  Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

Miracle on 34th street is a 1947 Christmas comedy/drama film which has become a perennial christmas favorite. The story takes place between Thanksgiving and Christmas in New York City, and centers around a department store Santa Claus who claims he is the real Santa. Without revealing too much, I would highly recommend this holiday classic to anyone that likes early 1940’s films, and a good laugh.

Number 6.  A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)

Charlie Brown movies alike have never failed to amuse their wide range of audience, and this Christmas edition is no exception. One of many in the beloved Charlie Brown series, A Charlie Brown Christmas takes a look into the story of Charlie Brown, as he decides whether or not to direct his school’s holiday play. A story about finding the true meaning of Christmas, and the importance of holiday cheer, this film’s youthful spirit may just make it the most heartwarming on the list.

Number 7.  The Hebrew Hammer (2003)

I bet you all thought I forgot about the latke lovers out there, but how could I ever? This Hanukkah comedy may take the cake  for most laugh out loud on our list.

As a child, Mordechai Carver was endlessly teased for his religious background by his widely christian classmates, leaving him distressed and confused. Fast forward years later, and Mordechai is now a veteran of the Israeli Defense Forces, protecting his people against anyone looking to cause them harm. The lengths he will go to defend his people is admirable and amusing. Even if you are someone who do not celebrate Hanukkah and/or have no background on the religion itself, I would keep this one at the top of your must see list. It is a film for anyone and everyone, and is sure to leave you dying of laughter.

Number 8.  The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

Jack Skellington, the famous the pumpkin king of mythical Halloween town, is tired of the town’s never ending celebration of Halloween. Feeling unfulfilled and trapped, he wanders into the woods one day until he stumbles upon a strange circle of trees, each engraved with their own holiday symbol. Searching for something new and exciting, he opens the door to the one with a Christmas tree on it, unaware of the magical world he will discover, and the events that will unfold. With a touch of music, mystery, and romance, this Tim Burton masterpiece will be sure to leave you watching it again and again.

Number 9.  A Christmas Story (1983)

All Ralphie Parker wants for Christmas is the new “Red Ryder air rifle”, and for bully Zach Ward to just leave him alone. This film follows youngster Ralphie as he struggles to deal with his grumpy father, dodge his bully, and somehow receive the gift he wants. Based on a book by Jean Shepherd, this heartwarming comedy will take you back to what it was like to face problems as a child, and

Number 10.  The Polar Express (2004)

Ah, the good old Polar Express. Maybe one of the most widely known Christmas Movies for kids of our generation, the Polar Express is a tail that tells itself. The Polar Express tells the story of a doubting teenage boy as he embarks on a remarkable journey to the North Pole. On the way, he realizes that life isn’t always what it seems, and that sometimes learning to believe is what everyone needs to really experience the magic around them.
