Last Wednesday, 2/7, John Jay High School was filled with excitement, as students and staff came together for the second annual Unity Day. Organized by LEAD John Jay, the event aimed to foster connections and promote inclusivity within the school community.
The day kicked off with each grade gathering in the gymnasium for a series of engaging activities. From games like “Head Shoulders Knees Ball” to community circles where students shared their appreciation for staff members and discussed ways to create more inclusivity, providing opportunities for meaningful interactions.
One of the event’s highlights was the creation of “howler” appreciation cards for staff members created by students. These heartfelt notes served as expressions of gratitude for the staff who contribute to the school community every day.
Throughout the day, students also participated in various activities such as “Wavelength”, John Jay staff trivia, and the “mat game”. Winners of the “mat game” from each grade had the honor of representing their peers at the Winter Pep Rally, which marked the end of Unity Day festivities.
At the pep rally, sports teams showcased their spirit, seniors were celebrated, along with performances by Route 121, the Treble Makers, and a preview of the upcoming Spring musical added to the excitement.
Reflecting on the day’s events, junior Rebecca Heath shared, “It was a really great experience. I felt like it had both aspects of being helpful toward bettering our school community and having fun. Definitely an improvement from last year.”
Unity Day not only provided a day of relaxation and fun, but also strengthened the bonds within individual grades and the school community as a whole. With its focus on connection and inclusivity, Unity Day has become a new tradition at John Jay School, leaving students and staff anticipating next year’s event.
