La La Land: A Review
The movie everyone seems to be talking about is Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land.” The film is expected to win numerous Oscars, and has already won seven Golden Globe Awards. I expected “La La Land” to be the typical sing-song broadway musical, however it was anything but typical. When the first scene of Damien Chazelle’s musical “Lala Land” came onto the screen, I was overwhelmed by color, jazz, and hope. The first scene kicks off on a traffic jammed Los Angeles freeway. Although, traffic usually brings anger and frustration, in this instance, the drivers break into song and dance. The first scene engulfs the screen and invites the audience into a colorful and hopeful beginning. This scene is one of many that captures the audience and imprints you with the jazz music.
Director Damien Chazelle wanted to bring back the twirling and soaring kind of musical. The style is modeled after old 1960 musicals. Chazelle is able to combine modern 21st Century technology with classic 20th Century style. The film is a beautiful blend of old and new. The film consists of bright colored clothing and elaborate dancing down freeways– all techniques once seen in old musicals. “La La Land” is a renewed and revolutionary musical.
La La land, directed by Damien Chazelle, tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz enthusiast. The musical follows the two throughout their many encounters, unfolding an inspiring story of dreaming, hoping, and loving. The boy-meets-girl storyline brings a familiarity, yet excitement to the film. Both Emma and Ryan portray their characters beautifully. Emma Stone is able to encapture a defeated, flawed actress, while Ryan Goseling conveys an angst-ridden, struggling jazz musician. The two encounter each other multiple times, and soon after become friends. Together, the artists struggle with ambition and overcome many challenges.
Besides the wonderful acting, the music creates a lively tone to the film. Justin Hurwitz, music director, creates enthusiastic, colorful ensembles. He incorporates the Jazz theme into each number. Also, Hurwitz combines new and old ideas as well. Classic Jazz is spiced up with technical sounds and modern tones. The music is the backbone of the movie. It has you wanting to jump out of your seat and dance along.
Damien Chazelle and Justin Hurwitz created a flawless musical. “La La Land” inspires the audience to believe again. But, the film will have you going home with tears in your eyes. The nostalgic ending teaches the value of love and dreams. You will leave the theater with a song in your heart and a beat in your feet.
