John Jay Students Travel to France
On the final day of the school year, 23 John Jay students traveled to Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, to participate in the second half of the biennial French Exchange Program. Back in March, we hosted our French counterparts from the Lycée Renoir, showing them New York and introducing them to our school and American culture. On June 26, the John Jay students began their adventure in France.
Cagnes-sur-Mer is a seaside town located on the Mediterranean coast between Nice and Antibes. For 16 days, we lived with our French families and immersed ourselves in French customs and language. We visited palaces, museums, exotic gardens, châteaus, and Roman ruins throughout the Côte d’Azur, Provence, and Monaco, and we ate some of the best food (and ice cream) in the world. Naturally, we also spent plenty of time on the world-famous beaches of the French Riviera building friendships with our French hosts that will last a lifetime. It was a transformative experience for all of the John Jay students. I am delighted to have been able to participate in this wonderful international tradition.

Merci! The JJFE Program was beyond worth it for our daughter and our family. The cultural experience was enriching as was the immersion into the French language — something the students would never get at home. Learning how others lived by living with them provided understanding, empathy, patience and an awareness of a world beyond their own. The messages we received started out nervous and completely unsure if being in France was a good thing or not. By the end of the two weeks, new friendships were formed among both the Americans and the French and the tears flowed not because of being in France, but having to leave it. Daily photos posted on FB and the Blog helped us at home and provided creative inspiration for the students. A new day, new friends, endless hugs, silliness, new experiences, smiles beyond compare and a new bond between the USA/France and among the JJHS students themselves. From our daughter herself: “By far the best 2 weeks of my life. I met the most amazing people and visited the most beautiful places. I’m so grateful to have these wonderful people in my life now…” Merci!
