Rob Gronkowski: Worth the Money?
Rob Gronkowski, tight end for the New England Patriots, has received a 1 game suspension for his late hit on Tre’Davious White during the Patriots’ 23-3 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Often regarded as one of the best offensive players in the NFL, Gronkowski is a physical specimen. At 6’6,” 265 pounds, and with the hands and speed of a deep-threat wide receiver, Gronkowski changes the game with his ability to draw two or more defenders in coverage and run through smaller secondaries. Despite his impressive play, Gronkowski’s production is consistently limited by his inability to control his emotions.
As displayed in Sunday’s game, Gronkowski is a repeat offender when it comes to personal fouls. Gronkowski has been fined three times in the past, once for an illegal block and twice for taunting. In total, Gronkowski has racked up over 350 yards in penalties in his 99 games played, a majority being offensive holding and personal foul calls. He is the second most penalized offensive skill player in the NFL. While electric with the ball, Gronkowski habitually disrupts the flow of the Patriots’ offense with boneheaded penalties.
Between his overly aggressive play and proneness to injury (he has missed 3-4 games each season), Gronkowski often leaves Patriots’ fans wondering what else Bill Belichick could do with $54 million of space in the Patriots’ salary cap. The Patriots’ player development program is one of the best in the league, and Belichick has consistently produced star players out of no-name draft picks, the most notable being Tom Brady, Julian Edelman, and Malcolm Butler.
