Reawaken the undying light” one of the first things you hear when you open Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch, the 5th title of the series. This brawler connects people from all over the world, all with one purpose – to battle! The game has 72 playable characters (also known as a roster )to select from, all with a different moveset to master. This number doesn’t even count the 5 more extra downloadable characters coming out later this year. The main game mode, fight, is what most people play. It involves up to 8 players to fight each other on the variety of maps the game has to offer. The game can be customized to include handicaps, stage hazards , items as well as many more.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the 5th title of the smash series, packing in more gameplay modes, fighters, stages and competitive tactics to the franchise. But how does it look? Super Smash Bros Ultimate has colorful graphics with a smooth animation style. The stages and backgrounds are colorful and sometimes have moving elements. All of the characters from the roster where clearly not overlooked when it comes to charter animation. Each character has distinct walking, running, jumping, and attacking animations, all while being smooth and seamless. Every single button on the joy con controller does something unique for every character so you can see how many hours of careful animation this took to produce the final game. As we already know, this is the 5th game in the franchise, and with each new release, the animation and graphics improve dramatically. In this update, they even improved on moveset animation for characters that already existed in previous games. We see stage graphics improve from the Wii U version in stages such as Suzaku Castle, Delfino Plaza, Castle Siege, Gaur Plain, Bridge of Eldin, Halberd, and Skyworld. The graphics and animation for this new game holds a high amount of support from the game owners.
Balance between fighters in all games are hard to master, yet crucial for the success of the game. No one wants to long online and be disappointed when everyone uses one character because they are simply too overpowered. Nintendo has learned how to master this and they do it effectively. We can clearly see Nintendo’s improvement from the first title of this series to the newest one. Cnets’ review even had the title “everyone is here, and balanced.” Nintendo recognizes that there are competitive players so to make this game be successful, the game needs to be balanced. This is the first time in Smash history that almost every player can agree that every player is balanced.
The endless combinations of matches in fight mode are just a fraction of what the game holds in the tiny cartridge you buy. There is a new single player mode where you can fight your way through a story to save the world from the everlasting abyss of the light and dark. You start off with kirby the main character and save other characters as you travel along your quest. Overall it’s great for new players to learn the mechanics of the game and is great when you don’t have online access to play with friends.
With 74 released fighters, 5 unreleased fighters, 103 stages of story mode, and online access, the Super Smash Bros Ultimate gives the player the experience a true gamer wants. However, the game’s real greatness is undermined by Nintendo and other gaming industries with a baseline cartridge price of $60, which is very expensive. Nonetheless, I can assure you that this is the ultimate way to smash!
