With a record of 11-5, John Jay Varsity Lacrosse has had a fantastic season. Coached by Tim Schurr, Jeremy Guski, Nick Daniello, and Sean O’Rourke, John Jay is entering the playoffs as the third seed behind Rye (2) and Yorktown (1). Even in one of the best lacrosse Sections in the nation, John Jay is confident that the Section Title is certainly obtainable.

John Jay’s most legendary rival, Yorktown, has been a large roadblock for John Jay in the past few years. John Jay has lost the past 15 games they’ve played against Yorktown, however that streak may be broken in these upcoming playoffs. The team is stacked, containing 7 D1 commits. Jackson Rieger (Binghamton) runs the show from the midfield with 28 goals and 32 assists. Kyle Casey leads Yorktown with 21 goals and 25 assists. With the first playoff game on Saturday, John Jay is getting hyped. “The boys are rolling into playoffs red hot and ready to rumble” said defensive Duke commit Braden Burke.

During the season, John Jay was able to push Manhasset, a top tier long island team, to overtime. Perhaps their best victory however was against Smithtown East, highly ranked in the tristate, winning 17-16 in overtime. Games like these give John Jay the confidence they need to give it their all every game. “With hard work and dedication, you can accomplish anything you can set your mind to. That’s been my mindset all season” said attackman Mike Minard. The end goal of any team is to be the best, and John Jay is the “closest they’ve been in years” to accomplishing this goal according to midfielder Dan Matthews. The desire to finally beat Yorktown is a driving factor behind John Jay moving forward, but it’s more than that. This season is about John Jay striving to win the Section and showing what they are capable of.
