After the New England Patriots’ comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51, there was nothing but celebration and mayhem as people stormed the field. Amidst the chaos, Tom Brady’s game worn jersey went missing. After an extensive investigation, it was discovered that Brady’s jersey was stolen from the postgame locker room.

Investigators used footage from Fox to discover that a man walked into the locker room, reached into Brady’s bag, snatched his jersey, and put it in a black plastic bag. He then swiftly left the locker room completely unnoticed. After examining approximately 20,000 credentials, authorities settled on a man named Martin Mauricio Ortega as the culprit. The Mexican Editorial Organization (OEM) was able to identify the man, as he was a director of one of its newspapers up until his resignation last Tuesday.

OEM made a statement Monday confirming that they recognized Ortega’s resignation due to family health issues and had no knowledge of his potential involvement in the case.

Brady’s jersey from Super Bowl 51 was recently recovered in Mexico. The FBI, with the help of Mexican authorities, successfully tracked down the jersey, and surprisely found more than what they were searching for. Brady’s missing jersey from Super Bowl 49 was also discovered in the same location, as well as star linebacker Von Miller’s helmet from Super Bowl 50. These items are now in the process of being authenticated by authorities according to Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.

Tom recently expressed his gratitude, stating, “I am happy my jerseys from SB 49 and SB 51 have been recovered, and I want to thank all of the law enforcement agencies involved. I know they worked hard on this case — and it is very much appreciated. Hopefully when I get the jerseys back I can make something very positive come from this experience” (ESPN).

Houston police have classified the theft of Brady’s jersey as a first-degree felony.
