A Symbol of Unity

In a time of tension and heartbreak, the Art Club has decided to present a symbol of unity to the students of John Jay. Plans for a new mural have arisen and are well on their way to becoming a source of joy for everyone around.

The new mural features a unity tree, representing peace in a time when it is most needed. The unease following the presidential election has worked it’s way into the very roots of the student body; hopefully this will remind us that no matter our opinions, we are still one. We are still the Tribe, and we always will be.

“I think the idea behind the mural – unity – is even more important now. We need to remember that we’re part of something bigger even if we’re divided right now,” says Zoe Shaw, a leader of the art club.

The design was created by the officers of the club; Corneil Smith, Zoe Shaw, and myself included. Foliage on the tree will be created by members of the art club and students alike, representing the diversity of the students and how we all combine to create something strong and beautiful.

The mural is still in process, and it will be hopefully completed by the end of May. It’s location is yet to be decided, but will likely be prominent enough for the students to savor it.

“I just hope the mural will bring someone a little joy every time they walk past it,”, says Judy, the beloved supervisor of the art club. “That’ll make it all worth it.”
